This particular one showcases community leaders and young people, highlighting the importance of diversity.
School Holiday Activities with Young Clients
Here are some highlights from our school holiday activities with young clients from our Settlement programs, SETS and HSP. They had a lot of fun connecting with other youth, making new friends, and taking some much-needed time to relax while enjoying sports at the beach, movie night, and a dance class with our talented Language Support Worker, Rush. Engaging in activities during school holidays is crucial for their wellbeing, providing them with opportunities to connect and stay active. That’s why it’s so important for us to create these spaces for them.
Youth Advisory Group Workshop
We had an unforgettable time with our Youth Advisory Group, where we learned more about each other and their passions, including a Hot Seat activity with our CEO, Shane, where they were very engaged, asking about how to become a positive leader and his multicultural background. They also shared their thoughts on young people’s challenges, like mental health and living costs. The night wrapped up with a surprise for them, a cooking lesson from the amazing Emanuel on making Argentinian Panchos and Chimichurri as we celebrated the farewell of our lovely Giselle, a wonderful member of our YAG.
Celebrating Refugee Week
We had our amazing Language Support Worker, Najma, who is also a young person, sharing her inspiring journey of resilience and courage coming to Australia as a refugee and giving back to her community during our Celebrating Refugee Week “Finding Freedom: Family” event.
Celebrating You, Harmony Event
Griffith Mates from Griffith University participated in this event, supporting the engagement of young people in the celebration of Harmony Week. In this video, they explained the importance of bringing different cultures together with other community members.
How Gabrielle Found Work Here in Australia
Watch Gabrielle, a young person and international student, tell how she found her dream job here on the Gold Coast. Our Employment and Training team has supported international students, migrants and refugees through cover letters, resumes and interview preparation to become employed.
MCCGC Cultural Identity Training
We conducted a pilot project of our Cultural Awareness Training program with 500 students at Miami State High School. We delivered cultural awareness training to promote multiculturalism and respect for differences. Through the training, students embraced their cultural backgrounds and felt a sense of belonging.
The Power of Language to Rebuild Families
This is Elsa, a community leader from the Ethiopian community who has been running an amazing initiative to teach Amharic to kids in her community. With 20 kids aged six up to 16, the group is open to anyone willing to learn Amharic and immerse themselves in the culture. This program goes beyond teaching Amharic to children; it helps families reconnect and understand their cultural identity. Imagine a family struggling to communicate, children unable to speak their parents' language, and parents limited in their English. For many Ethiopian families on the Gold Coast, this is a reality. The Amharic (Ethiopian) Language on the Gold Coast runs in our Southport office every Sunday.?MCCGC’s partnership with Elsa is evidence of the power of cultural leadership.
Sisters for Success - Celebrating International Women's Day
In this video, we heard the voices of young women sharing their stories about what it means to be a woman and the power to connect to overcome gender bias, gender inequality, and the challenges they face. They also discussed how to educate people by having conversations.
Sisters for Success 2020
We commemorated International Women's Day with an inspiring group of local young women. The event aimed to foster community connections and provide a platform for participants to share their experiences and strategies for overcoming challenges.
